چکیده

IN November, 1891, one of us (Welch ~), at a meeting of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Society, reported with demonstrations the discovery of a gas-forming bacillus found in the eml)hysematous tissues and blood of a man dead of aneurism of the aorta. In JulyAugust, 1892, Welch and Nuttall published a full report of this case and described the characters of the bacillus, ibr which they proposed the name Bacillus aerogenes capsulatus. Since this report there have been published, both in this country and in Europe, additional observations of the occurrence of this bacillus, and we have had the opportunity of studying a considerable number of cases in which this organism was found. We purpose in the present article, upon the basis of these published reports and of our further observations, to consider the distribution and characters of this micro-organism, and more particularly its relations to various affections and conditions of human beings. We must refer to the original paper of Welch and Nuttall for the full report of the case in which the bacillus aerogenes capsulatus was first ibund, for the detailed description of the morphological and cultural characters and the effects of intravenous inoculation of this bacillus, and for the deductions which were then drawn as to the probable relation of the bacillus to conditions characterized by the presence of gas in the blood and tissues. Here we shall give a summary of some of the salient points contained in this paper.

Antagonism by Aerobacter Strains.

The literature on the antagonistic action of members of the genus Aerobacter is rather scanty. Winslow and Cohen (1918a, 1918b) reported that when a mixture of 46 per cent BaciUus aerogenes cells and 54 per cent Bacillus coli cells suspended in unsterilized tap water was stored 60 days, only 29 per cent of the remaining cells were B. coli. A slight degree of antagonism might conceivably have ex...

A Case of General Gaseous Emphysema with Gas Cysts in the Brain Formed after Death and Due to Bacillus Mucosus Capsulatus, with a Consideration of the Gas-producing Properties of Certain Members of This Group in the Cadavers of Animals

In the case reported in this article there was septicaemia with special localization of the microorganisms in the brain, with gas cysts of the brain and general gaseous emphysema due to Bacillus mucosus capsulatus (aërogenes group). The bacillus isolated from the organs of this case, as well as other members of the aërogenic group of Bacillus mucosus capsulatus can cause general gaseous emphyse...

Antibacterial Activity of Pterocarpus santalinus

Antibacterial activity of leaf and stem bark of Pterocarpus santalinus (Fabaceae) was investigated. The antibacterial activity was tested against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Among the two extracts tested, stem bark extract exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against the tested organisms. The stem bark extract showed maximum activity against Enterobacter aerogenes...

The differentiation of Aerobacter aerogenes and Aerobacter cloacae.

Many attempts, based on biochemical properties, have been made to differentiate strains of the tribe Eschericheae-a biochemically heterogeneous collection of the Enterobacteriaceae-into genera. In the sixth edition of Bergey's Manual (Breed et al., 1948), these strains, if of animal origin, are classified into three genera: Escherichia, Aerobacter, and Klebsiella. The genus Aerobacter is subdiv...

Degradation of uric acid by certain aerobic bacteria.

We have isolated and identified nine cultures of aerobic bacteria capable of growing on an elective medium containing uric acid as the only source of carbon, nitrogen, and energy. Four of these cultures were identified as Aerobacter aerogenes, two as Klebsiella pneumoniae, and the remainder as Serratia killiensis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus species. Another culture identified as P. fl...
